Here is where we can discuss any thoughts about the Conference Form. (You can click the words for a hyperlink to a PDF). You can also access the document in the 4/5 Dropbox. Please add any comments you have below. When responding to someone's thoughts, it is convention to put the @ in front of your comment.
For example:
Cary Kirby says: I think this is a great idea! I wonder if we can add a something about multiple goals.
Holly Wall says: @Cary, I agree with what you are saying about multiple goals. How do you think we can make that happen. I also think we need to consider how long it will take the students to fill this out.
Macy Geiger says: @Cary, totally agree! @Holly, I was thinking about the same thing. Ideally they will eventually take over the task, but they are going to need A LOT of scaffolding to be able to do that successfully. I was thinking we would have some pre-populated forms at the beginning of the year. It will take a LOT of modeling to help them understand what we are looking for. But we are going to have some great meta-cognitive thinking going on!

ReplyDeleteI finally got on to google! Yay!
ReplyDeleteWe need to think about how we are going to keep track of these. Paper copies for us and kids? How can we do it electronically without 1:1?
ReplyDeleteI made a note on the bottom of the conference sheet in the dropbox about including something on where the assignment should go when it is completed & if it is portfolio worthy.
What about reflections? Do we want to create a new reflection form? A daily reflection for use of time & one for each goal/assignment completed?
@Carrie - I get what you are saying, but I'm a little leery of more paperwork. There has to be a way for us to capture this information without having a mountain of papers (either real or electronic). The more paperwork we create, the less authentic this will become.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, what do we do about reflections? Maybe written reflections for a grade become Type 2 writings every week or so, rather than a journal type thing that we are taking up everyday. They are going to be doing a lot of reflecting in our conferences (if we do them correctly) and if we implement CW (Collins) with fidelity, there is even more.
I just think there has to be a better way for that.
I agree . . . I am all for less paperwork . . . for us & for the kids. But I'm thinking about scaffolding. The same reason we are creating the conference form . . . to help ensure that we are all on the same page with the direction of our conferencing.
ReplyDeleteFor the reflections I was thinking if we could all agree on a "form" to guide student reflections to be more meaningful & so they are all being asked to think/write about the same things. I don't want a journal full of "I only sharpened my pencil once, I wrote lots of tracks and I didn't distract anyone." If we create a guide to help us teach them how to reflect then in time the reflections will be more meaningful . . . again in an effort to keep us all on the same page.
I agree that creating a mountain of electronic paperwork is no better than a mountain of real paper. But we do need systems that will be consistent & will help students understand our expectations.
Also, on the feedback form from Julie she has asked that we all come to a consensus & submit 1 final copy for the L/C . . . Team Leader job??
So, is anyone else wondering how we are going to keep track of what science activities are completed by each student?
ReplyDeleteHow we will keep track of grades? With different kids working on different menus/choices at different times . . . Maybe for the grade book we just enter menu 1, menu 2, etc. and have kids order their choices in that way?
I'm just thinking about the long term . . . how will we keep track of what has been done & what needs to be done for each student?
Any thoughts?
@Carrie, this is me just thinking out loud, but it seems to me like we could put the standard into the grade book (ex: SC.5.P.8.1). Then the kids and the parents would know exactly which standards they had met expectations for and which ones they hadn't. It might also be plausible that if a student's work doesn't show mastery then at the end of the semester/9weeks/whatever (after they've finished the other work) they can be given an opportunity to go back to the menu and choose different options to meet the standard. Then the grade in the grade book is changed (no late penalty, no you had to do this twice penalty). That seems like it might be a way to introduce AFL and to slowly start introducing the language to the parents as well.
ReplyDelete@Carrie (re: LC proposal) The deadline to have that done is June 30th. Since the feedback was given (I assume) on the 17th, Friday, and this is a holiday weekend, it will probably have to wait till Monday and our Team Leader is on vacation right now. I don't remember who actually submitted the proposals and since it wasn't me I don't have any of the feedback. I'm not sure what consensus needs to be made. If you have it (what exactly are we needing to agree about/what changes need to be made). If you can share that information then we can start thinking about it and actually start working on it come Monday.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the email on the proposal. I did not scroll down far enough on the COE site to see the 30th as the due date & don't recall hearing that date. I got an email from Julie & thought it needed to be done ASAP . . . again I apologize for the misunderstanding on my end.
ReplyDeleteCan everybody view the feedback on the site? Or just those who uploaded the proposals? The email I got from Julie came with a link http://online.education.ufl.edu/mod/assignment/view.php?id=97341
Doesn't look like anything major needs to be corrected - just need some specifics on days of work, how/when we need Dr. Pringle's assistance & arranging PD days for reading work. I just didn't want to respond for the whole team without a consensus & didn't want to inundate Julie with 7 different replies.
I've sent Kirby an email asking him to post a place here that we could all comment on. Hope this helps.:)
ReplyDeleteHey, I re-organized and looked at the conference form based off one I found online. What do you think? It's in the 4-5 LC dropbox labeled "Student Goal Organizer". One change that I liked was that it has a place for them to write their goal for the next conference, which in the beginning would be later that day and later on will be every day to every other day. I also provided space for them to write steps to complete their next goal and a reminder for the teachers to help the students pace out the modules with the kids in their planners.
ReplyDeleteI like it on first glance. I haven't really had time to process it, but it seems to contain everything we've talked about. As an added benefit, it isn't real lengthy, so it isn't asking for them to write a paragraph reflection everyday. But I think we should use the blogs for some of those reflections like once a week or something.
