Here is the video that I sent in a link by email. I would like to use this during Open House. We also need to discuss when/how Open House will look. We talked about splitting into smaller sections, but we need to discuss people's thoughts and willingness around that.
Nevertheless, here is the video:
I want to do multiple open houses with a max of 10 families at each. This would allow us to truly explain the changes we will be making and give the parents a lot of opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification. I think this will lead to MUCH less confusion and make the beginning of the year and conferences go much smoother. It also gives us another opportunity to actually build some relationships with parents (there is no relationship building in a traditional open house).
ReplyDeleteI think this video would be a great way to start the open house meeting. It really gets to the heart of what we are trying to do and why we are trying to do it while at the same time being witty and interesting to watch. It also shows that we aren't just making this stuff up.
I also think we should have a list of resources for interested parents to see. In that vein, I think it is important that if you haven't already read The Global Achievement Gap and/or Disrupting Class, you should. It is hard to be a leader (which we all are) if you don't know where you are going. :)
I think splitting into smaller sections would be nice. It would allow us to better explain what it is we're doing and why. WIth as much as we're hoping to change next year I imagine there will be questions. It might also be easier for parents, especially if they have more than 1 kid. I wonder though will the length be about the same/longer/shorter? How many sections? 3? 4? or are we talking more than that? Would it be 2 day? 3 days? Would some of them be before 5 or 5:30 for the parents that can come earlier allowing for greater flexibility and helping parents that work nights?
ReplyDeleteI think maybe 6 sections so it is 10ish families in each. But maybe we can schedule that so it only goes over 3 nights (so 2 per night). We should probably work out some way for them to sign up - there has to be a decent online tool for that.
